OSCE Training
The Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) is the regulatory authority responsible for the registration of nurses in New Zealand. From 2024 onwards, nurses applying to the council have to undertake an online theoretical examination and a clinical competence assessment (OSCE) to practise as a nurse in New Zealand. The theoretical examination can be completed from a Pearson Vue accredited centre in your home country.
After successfully completing the theoretical examination, students will receive an invitation from the Council to attend the OSCE. You will have an 18-month timeframe to attend the OSCE from the date of the Council’s initial invitation. If you are unsuccessful after 3 attempts, or the allowed time limit has expired, your application for registration will close. If you couldn’t attend within the allotted time span due to exceptional circumstances, contact your Nursing Council case manager, as you may be eligible for an extension of time. If you fail in the 3 attempts, you have to re-start with a new application. Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) is a 3-hour clinical examination with 10 stations or scenarios and the exam is held at the Nurse Maude Simulation and Assessment centre in Christchurch.
This new clinical assessment has been implemented from June 2024 and our first batch of clients attended the exam in June itself and successfully cleared the exam. Nurses outside the European Economic Area who are interested in working in the UK have to clear a competence test to get registration. For the UK, the test of competence includes Part 1, a computer-based test (CBT) and Part 2, OSCE. The CBT can be taken at a Pearson Vue test centre available in your home country. The CBT is split into two parts:
Part A – Numeracy
Part B – Clinical questions
The OSCE is available in the UK only, at a designated test centre. The first step in the registration process includes completing an online application process in the UK NMC website. Once the NMC has informed you that you need to take the test of competence, you can book your CBT with Pearson VUE. The OSCE has 10 stations:
- Four stations are linked together around a scenario: the APIE (one station for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation)
- Four stations to test skills (two pairs of two skills)
- Two stations to assess the candidate’s values and behaviours and evidence-based practice.
Derrick Jones has top-notch training facility in supporting you to clear the UK competency test. We have qualified trainers who have many years of experience in this area. Our exclusive training comprises updated & detailed preparatory materials, flexible training schedule and access to a learning app for practising questions. For OSCE, Derrick Jones has set up a well-equipped lab in Cochin, Kerala where we impart hands-on experience, live demonstration and scenario-based practice for our clients. The sessions include online and offline classes. For more details about the schedule and training, contact us.
An international nurse has to apply and get registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) to work as a nurse in the country and also need to apply for a visa. The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) acts on behalf of NMBA to verify the candidature of an international nurse applicant. Most internationally qualified nurses (IQN) from developing countries comes under the category of Stream B while applying through APHRA if they are eligible. They have to successfully complete NCLEX-RN multiple-choice question (MCQ) exam and OSCE to get registration. Once your profile is approved by APHRA your IQN dashboard will update you to apply for MCQ. The NCLEX-RN exam is delivered through Pearson Vue and most countries have test centres. Regarding OSCE, the NMBA and AHPRA currently schedule the exam 5 times a year and it is held in Adelaide. After clearing the MCQ successfully, candidate’s IQN dashboard will advise that they are eligible to sit the OSCE. Candidates have to attend 10 stations or scenarios for clinicals.
