Living expenses required in New Zealand for study

Migrating to a new country is exciting but also a huge challenge, especially in learning to manage your finances. If you’re planning to migrate to New Zealand, this article will tell you about the living costs. First off, It is important that you provide proof that you have at least $20,000 to cover your living expenses when applying for a student visa. Furthermore, your expenses will depend on your lifestyle and which part of the country you choose to live in.

It is always a cheaper option to live in a small town than in a big city because of its lower housing and transport costs. For instance, the University of Auckland and Victoria University of Wellington estimate living costs to come up to $20,000-$27,000 in a year. Whereas the University of Otago estimates it to be $18,000-$21,000. However, you may be able to tackle some of your costs by working part-time. Almost all student visas allow individuals to work up to 20 hours per week or even full-time during holidays.

Now let’s look into each aspect of living costs in New Zealand

Accommodation

Rent in New Zealand is usually paid out weekly or fortnightly, especially by those who live in a private house or flat. But if you choose a hall of residence managed by your institution, paying upfront is a feasible option. A room or a shared house will cost you $140 to $293 per week, depending on your location. Whereas a hall of residence with catered food will cost you $346 per week.

Food

It is ideal to budget at least $80 to $120 per week to cover your basic grocery purchases. These prices may vary from store to store. However, if you choose to stay at a catered homestay or a hall of residence, this cost can be cut down as it will be included in your accommodation fee.

Transport

New Zealand has a reliable public transport system such as buses offering cheaper fares for students. For those who live in the suburbs, Auckland and Wellington have train services that ply between the city and the outer suburbs. You can cut down on the transportation costs if you live closer to your campus.

Entertainment

All work and no play ain’t good for any one! And that’s why budgeting on entertainment is as important as doing the same for aspects of your life. The University of Auckland suggests keeping aside $55 each week for entertainment. This will cover dinners and movie nights.
